The Washington Huskies scored 17 points on three Stanford turnovers and sacked Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee eight times during a 40-22 victory in Seattle on Saturday night.

Michael Wilson’s 23-yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter carved a seven-point dent into an early 17-0 Huskies lead, but Stanford never cut the deficit to less than 10 points. Wilson had a second touchdown on an exhilarating 78-yard catch-and-run with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, helping the fifth-year senior to a six-catch, 176-yard night. But by that point, unfortunately, the major question remaining about the game wasn’t whether Stanford would lose but by how much.

The Cardinal fell to 1-2, with both losses coming in Pac-12 conference play. Washington improved to 4-0 in its league debut. Stanford has now lost nine of the past 10, with the only win coming against Football Championship Subdivision opponent Colgate in this year’s season opener.

Much as in Stanford’s second game of the season, a 41-28 home loss to USC, the Cardinal offense displayed a penchant for giving the ball away and allowing sacks, while the Cardinal defense proved to be somewhere south of mediocre. Stanford has 11 turnovers on the young season, including four each against Colgate and USC, but has only forced the opponent to cough up the ball once (an interception of a Colgate pass).
