Stanford football senior class tributes

In late 2010, as the Stanford football squad enjoyed an immensely successful campaign, I tweeted a tribute to the team’s seniors before their last regular season game. Since then, this has become something of a tradition for me near each season’s end.

This compilation also includes some in-game and postgame tweets that I made highlighting the performances of seniors in regular-season contests, but not bowl games, played after their tribute appeared.

This page features the original text from my Twitter tributes, with a few exceptions. I deleted broken links from my 2010 tribute. To improve readability, I removed some all intra-tweet carriage returns, which made their debut in the 2013 tribute and were used occasionally in subsequent tribute and game tweets. I made a small number of changes to the content of the original tweets in order to fix typographical mistakes, to clarify grammar and to correct the occasional error; these changes typically appear in boldface text.

Finally, I inserted asterisks to mark student-athletes who appear in multiple tributes. One asterisk (*) marks the first mention of the name of a student-athlete who was a fourth-year senior at the time of the tribute. Two asterisks (**) mark the first mention of the name of a student-athlete who was a fifth-year senior at the time.

This page was first published on the afternoon of Dec. 5, 2013. At the time, it contained only the original 2010 senior class tributes. Over the following days, I added the 2011, 2012 and 2013 tributes.

The 2016 Stanford football senior class tribute, my seventh, was added a few days before the 120th Big Game. The 2017 tribute, my eighth, debuted on Twitter a few hours before that contest and was added to this page shortly before the team closed out its regular season by hosting Notre Dame. My ninth tribute, in 2018, appeared on Twitter before the UCLA game and was added to this page on Nov. 27.

Enjoy, fellow Stanford football fans…

…and Go Stanford!!!

Hail RB Bryce Love, Stanford’s 2018 leader in rushes (122) and rushing yards (580). He went for a short TD and 136 yards on 22 rushes against USC, including a season-long 59-yard run. #GoStanford

Love’s five rushing touchdowns are tied for the team lead; he scored against Oregon (22 yards), Notre Dame (39), Washington and OSU (28). The team captain also had a 43-yard dash vs. WSU. #GoStanford

In his first college start, at Notre Dame in 2016, Love ran for 129 yards, a TD and a two-point conversion in a 17-10 win. He later had a 56-yard TD run at Oregon State and recorded 100-yard rushing games vs. Rice and North Carolina. #GoStanford

Which brings us to 2017, and — well, let’s go through each game in order.
Aug. 26 vs. Rice (Australia): 13 rushes for 180 yards, one TD (10 yards).

Sept. 9 at USC: 17 rushes for 160 yards, one TD (75 yards).

Oct. 14 vs. Oregon: 17 for 147, two TDs (5 and 67 yards).
Love was injured against the Ducks and did not play Oct. 26 at Oregon State.

Nov. 4 at Washington State: 16 rushes for 69 yards, one touchdown (52 yards).
Nov. 10 vs. Washington: 30 for 166, three TDs (52 yards).
Nov 18 vs. Cal: 14 for 101, one TD (57 yards).

Nov. 25 vs. Notre Dame: 20 rushes for 125 yards, no scores.

Dec. 28 vs. TCU (Alamo Bowl): 26 for 145 yards, two TDs (15 and 69 yards).

Love finished the year with 2,118 yards on 263 runs and 19 touchdowns. He was the Pac-12 offensive player of the year, he won the Doak Walker and Lombardi awards…
And he was — say it with me! — the Heisman Trophy runner-up. #GoStanford

Love’s 2017 rushing yardage was the highest in school history, besting Christian McCaffrey’s 2,019 in 2015 and Toby Gerhart’s 1,871 in 2009. His 19 rushing TDs in 2017 were the fourth most in Stanford history. #GoStanford

Love’s 16 career 100-yard rushing games are tied for fourth in school history. His dozen 100-yard efforts in 2017 broke Gerhart’s and McCaffrey’s shared record of 11. McCaffrey (2015) and Love (2016-17) share the school record for consecutive 100-yard games (12). #GoStanford

Love’s 29 career rushing TDs and 3,707 rushing yards rank fifth and fourth on Stanford’s career lists, respectively. And his career average of 7.06 YPC (3,707 yards, 525 runs) is the highest in school history. #GoStanford

Friends and fellow @StanfordFball fans, this ends my tribute to the seniors. Soon, it will be time to play UCLA! #GoStanford

2018 senior class tribute addenda — part 1

BRYCE LOVE runs up the middle for 12! That’s the kind of play the offense has been missing for most of the season.
First down at midfield. Costello throws into coverage and is lucky that wasn’t picked — again. Irwin the target.
#GoStanford #NCAAfb

#GoStanford #NCAAfb

With that, Arcega-Whiteside ties Troy Walters for second on the Stanford career receiving touchdowns with 26, behind Ken Margerum (32). Arcega-Whiteside with 12 TD catches this year now.
#GoStanford #NCAAfb

Love on second and two runs for about 10. He looks quick and agile today as he hasn’t perhaps since the USC game.
Costello incomplete throw to Irwin in the end zone.
#GoStanford #NCAAfb

I think Frank Buncom got in there for a sack of Speight!!!
#GoStanford #NCAAfb #partyinthebackfield

Love powers past a defender off left tackle for a TWO-YARD TOUCHDOWN!!!

#GoStanford #NCAAfb

#GoStanford #NCAAfb

On first down, CAMERON SCARLETT runs for about a dozen yards!
#GoStanford #NCAAfb

#GoStanford #NCAAfb

Bryce Love converts the two-point try to put Stanford ahead, 49-42, with 8:19 to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#GoStanford #NCAAfb

Love powered through a couple of defenders to score two points on the ground. I think this is the best he’s looked since game two vs. USC. #GoStanford #NCAAfb

Bryce Love with 22 carries for 85 yards, a long run of 22 yards and a two-yard touchdown in arguably his second-best effort of the season. (His best showing was inarguably against USC.)

Senior RB Remound Wright does most of the work on this drive with a big run and then a short carry for the touchdown! #GoStanford #NCAAfb

Field-goal attempt coming up from Jordan Williamson. And it’s good! 10-0 Stanford!!! #GoStanford #NCAAfb

A.J. Tarpley with an end-zone fumble recovery that is highly reminiscent of his 2011 recovery at USC in triple OT!!! #GoStanford #NCAAfb

Cal’s Jared Goff is picked again. Moments later, it’s HOGAN ON THE KEEPER FOR THE TOUCHDOWN!!! #GoStanford #NCAAfb

Remound Wright fights his way to a first down! #GoStanford #NCAAfb

JORDAN RICHARDS INTERCEPTS JARED GOFF LUKE RUBENZER!!! Although he is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct afterward. #GoStanford #NCAAfb

Punter Ben Rhyne’s tackle prevents a Cal touchdown return. Yikes! #GoStanford #NCAAfb

I should note that Ty Montgomery hasn’t played since injuring his shoulder early in the game. Get well soon, Ty!!! #GoStanford #NCAAfb
