Stanford football senior class tributes

In late 2010, as the Stanford football squad enjoyed an immensely successful campaign, I tweeted a tribute to the team’s seniors before their last regular season game. Since then, this has become something of a tradition for me near each season’s end.

This compilation also includes a small number of in-game tweets that I made highlighting the performances of seniors in regular-season contests, but not bowl games, that were played immediately after their tribute appeared.

This page features the original text from my Twitter tributes, with a few exceptions. I deleted broken links from my 2010 tribute. To improve readability, I removed all intra-tweet carriage returns, which made their debut in the 2013 tribute and were used occasionally in subsequent tribute and game tweets. I made a small number of changes to the content of the original tweets in order to fix typographical mistakes, to clarify grammar and to correct the occasional error; these changes typically appear in boldface text.

Finally, I inserted asterisks to mark student-athletes who appear in multiple tributes. One asterisk (*) marks the first mention of the name of a student-athlete who was a fourth-year senior at the time of the tribute. Two asterisks (**) mark the first mention of the name of a student-athlete who was a fifth-year senior at the time.

This page was first published on the afternoon of Dec. 5, 2013. At the time, it contained only the original 2010 senior class tributes. Over the following days, I added the 2011, 2012 and 2013 tributes. The 2014 Stanford football senior class tribute debuted on Twitter shortly before the 117th Big Game was played; I added it to this compilation on the following day.

Enjoy, fellow Stanford football fans…

…and Go Stanford!!!

Rector set a team-high mark for catches in a game in 2015 with 8 receptions for 103 yards vs. Oregon. #GoStanford

Rector’s career average of 18.3 yards per catch is fourth all-time in @StanfordFball history. #GoStanford

Whitfield’s lone college TD (so far) will be recalled as long as Stanford plays UCLA: Kodi’s Catch, a one-handed TD snag. #GoStanford

The 30-yard reception was the longest play of Whitfield’s career, and one of the most amazing @StanfordFball catches ever. #GoStanford

Whitfield’s only pick came moments after ESPN replayed his 2013 TD following Francis Owusu’s circus catch vs. UCLA this year. #GoStanford

Hogan is second in @StanfordFball career passing percentage (65.8, after Andrew Luck’s 67.0). #GoStanford

Hogan is fourth in Stanford career passing yards (8,653), trailing Steve Stenstrom (10,911), Luck (9,430) + John Elway (9,349). #GoStanford

Hogan is fourth in @StanfordFball career passing touchdowns with 66, trailing Luck (82), Elway (77) and Stenstrom (74). #GoStanford

Hogan was 17 of 19 (279 yards, 2 TDs) vs. Arizona. He also tossed three touchdowns apiece vs. UCF and UCLA. #GoStanford

Hogan has four rushing TDs in the past three games, including a career high 14 carries for 112 yards with 2 scores at WSU. #GoStanford

Hogan’s 39-yard run at WSU was the longest of his career until his 59-yard touchdown run against the Cougars later in the game. #GoStanford

In 2014, Hogan threw for 19 TDs. He had 2-plus TDs vs. Davis (3), Army (4), WSU (3), OSU (2), Utah (2), UCLA (2) + Maryland (2). #GoStanford

In 2013, Hogan threw for 20 TDs. He had 2-plus TDs vs. San Jose State (2), Army (3), ASU (2), WSU (3) and Cal (a career-high 5). #GoStanford
